Hello!
I thought that I would do something a little different today for Wyrd & Wonder and look at music. Some on the list are covers or versions of fantasy songs, others are music that I (and this is very much personal opinion) associate with fantasy whether through listening to it while reading/writing fantasy (I can’t work without background noise, and its usually music or Criminal minds), or just through the name. Of course, this list is highly subjective, and I am always find new music but here we go!
1) Clamavi De Profundis
This was a recent discovery and I have fallen in love with their takes on Tolkien songs and poems, in particular I have been listening to The Song of Beren and Lúthien and the Lament of Boromir.
2) Peter Hollens
I discovered Peter Hollens while searching Youtube for the A Capella group from my university, and with a few exceptions I love both his original and cover songs. In particular The Hobbit Drinking Medley (with Hank Green) and his GOT songs: The Rains of Castamere, Jenny’s Song and Timbers & Wind ( The Red Wedding).
3) Taylor Davies
Instrumental music is my favourite when writing, and I love violin music so stumbling over Taylor Davies was a blessing. I actually found her through her cover of the main theme to the anime Fairy Tail and she has done a range of original songs as well as anime/movie/video game covers including: Toss a Coin to Your Witcher, For the Dancing and the Dreaming (HTTYD2), and the Game of Thrones Theme.
4) Two Steps from Hell
Mostly instrumental, and recommended to me by nearly every member of my DnD party – and writing friends, this is my main go to when writing, particularly for fight scenes. A few of my favourite tracks are: Victory, Winterspell (which is the song I associate most strongly with my main DnD character), Blackheart and Impossible.
5) Phil Rey
Again, mostly instrumental, and I actually came across him through a fan video for Critical Role and fell in love. My favourites are ‘Ad Honorem’ (from that first video that lead me to him) and ‘We the People’.

Honourable mentions:
* Lindsey Stirling | Youtube| Instrumental/Violin
* Dan Vasc ‘Toss a Coin to Your Witcher’ (Metal Cover)
* Critical Role – Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Sam Riegel ‘Your turn to Roll’ (It had to make the list somewhere)
* Also the LOTR and Fairy Tail soundtracks in general.

What are your favourite ‘fantasy’ musicians? Are there certain tracks that remind you of a fantasy novel? That you listen to while reading/writing? Let me know, I am always on the look out for more music.

I’m noting all of these down; I really enjoy listening to medieval/fantasy music when I’m reading.

I’m familiar with Peter Hollens through his collaboration with Lindsey Stirling- I loved the video by them that I saw! It’s been a few years though, I need to check out his more recent stuff I’m sure! I love fantasy music and music that evokes that mood when gaming or writing, so I was glad I saw your post. 🙂 I definitely need to check out those Tolkien songs!
